UNDERSTANDING GEORGIA'S LANDSCAPE

Before you run for public office, it's important to have a broad understanding of Georgia's civic environment. In order to change it, candidates must understand where they fit and what the odds will be like long-term.

THE POLITICAL POWER DYNAMIC

Who Runs For Office

There are over 525,000 governmental units in the United States. Only 2% of people in the U.S. run for public office. This means that representation within this 2% is extremely important for the well-being of residents in every state in the country.

GENDER

75% of American candidates are men.

RACE

82% of candidates are white.

AGE

43% of candidates are age 65 and older.

ORIENTATION

99.06% of candidates are heterosexual.

WOMEN IN OFFICE

Gender represents one of the primary demographical divide in the United States. Women make up more than half of the American electorate and half the American population, but still hold less than one-third of congressional and state legislative seats.

Women only serve in 2,274 out of 7,383 seats.

This totals only 31% of state legislature seats.

KNOWING THE SIX POLITICAL STATES OF GEORGIA

Georgia has six political states determined by region, each with its own ideology -- not just red or blue or even Democrat or Republican, but a clear set of norms and social values. Wherever you choose to run for office in Georgia, you need to understand the type of politics in play. Once you understand the political landscape of your region, you can design a winning strategy.
Never forget: elections are locally administered. All Voting Is Local.
